Wow! What a great book! “Smoky, Sweaty, Rowdy, and Loud – Tales of Cleveland’s Legendary Rock and Roll Landmarks” by Mike and Janice Olszewski. It’s just what the title says, amazing venues old and present in Cleveland Ohio. I have fond memories of the Richfield Coliseum, The Agora, Cleveland Municipal Stadium, The Phantasy Nite Club and Theater, The Variety Theater, The Empire Concert Club, The Euclid Tavern (which i booked 1989 through 1995) and and many more. The Municipal Stadium where they held the ‘World Series of Rock’ for many years, he covers the 1978 Rolling Stones show which drew 86,000 people, general admission…that’s the way they rolled then. I remember seeing Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Journey, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC (Bon Scott) and the very first United States appearance of The Scorpions at one show there. Other memories i have from venues mentioned is Motorhead at The Variety where they set the record of the loudest show ever. It was so loud the ceiling started to come down and they were eventually unplugged. Metallica on Ride the Lighting tour, the Dead Kennedy’s, Venom, Slayer and Exodus on one show plus many more. The Agora I saw Metallica on the Kill Em All tour, Accept, Slayer, Sisters of Mercy, and so on. At The Phantasy i caught Ministry on The Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Taste tour, NIN on Pretty Hate Machine tour, Peter Murphy, Voivod, Saxon, Anthrax with their original singer, Raven and so on. The Empire I saw the Revolting Cocks, NIN, KMFDM, and many more. The Euclid Tavern, where do i start, The Jesus Lizard, Cop Shoot Cop, Soul Coughing, Cows and enough to fill 6 years of rock, and the Richfield Coliseum where i saw my first show in 1977 which was Queen News of The World tour, the Black and Blue tour, Aerosmith a ton of times, Kiss, BOC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and on and on.
This is my new favorite book. There are so many rooms to cover he couldn’t get them in one book…so he’s going to write a second one that will feature the ones that didn’t get into this book.
The book is published by Gray & Company publishers www.grayco.com – I went to the site and it hasn’t been put up yet at the time of me writing this…it is brand new. I’m sure if you’re interested in purchasing it (highly recommended) email them and they’ll set you up.

a little over two years ago, artist scott pickering and myself did a collaboration show called “double dog daddy-o”. each piece we both worked into, i would do 10 and he would do 10, then we’d swap and work on each others. well, we’re getting started on creating a new body of work together, date and location of the show has yet to be determined, but it should happen by years end…stay tuned…. below is one of the pieces we did last time, give you an idea of what to expect.

so…….i’m sitting in front of the TV while scratching in my sketch book. the ellen show is on in the background. i stop and look up and she has a dancing family on, i guess the family that dances together gets on the ellen show together. she then has one of those Kardashians on, i don’t know which one, i don’t catch up with the Kardashians….one thing i noticed is ellen isn’t funny, she’s more of a smart ass, she takes tiny mean jabs at her guests, or at least at that Kardashian. i felt bad because the dis’s were too subtle that they went over the kardashians’ head, which isn’t hard to do….which made ellen look all that much more of a non gracious host. well there you go, aren’t you glad you stopped by 😉
